Overview
The
Solid Rock Family Worship Center (formerly Elberton Church of God) had
it’s beginning in a tent revival located on Gordon street conducted in
the late 1930’s by Myrtle Whitehead and Pauline Jackson.
The services were moved from the tent to the home of Mr. &
Mrs. Carl Haynes. While located in the Haynes
home, Rev. H.M. Duck and J.C. Mauldin came from Lavonia, Georgia
to conduct the services.
Services soon moved to the home of Norman Brown on
Wilcox
and at the Harrison Family home located next door. While
on Wilcox
the church was officially organized in October of 1938 with eleven
charter members. Rev. H.M. Duck was the first
pastor.
In 1939, Mr. Norman Brown purchased a corner lot
on Wilcox
for $15.00 and a church was erected and completed during the pastorate
of Rev. G.M. Chitwood. Heights
In 1943 the church decided to relocate and
purchased property on Clairmont Avenue. Construction was began in June 1944 during the
pastorate of Rev. Earl Rackley and completed in 1945 during the
pastorate of Rev. C.J. Reed. In 1950 the church
purchased the home next door for a parsonage during the pastorate of
Rev. John Heaton.
In 1974, during the pastorate of Rev. Chester
Edwards, the church purchased property on Hartwell Highway
to build a larger sanctuary. A donation of $5,000
was given by the late Frank Sinatra to assist in the completion of the
building. Construction was completed in 1977
during the pastorate of Rev. Garland Stout. During the pastorate of Rev.
James Butler, the administrative wing of the current facility was
planned and completed in 1987. At this same time the Family
was also built and completed in 1987. Life Center
In the year 2000, during
the pastorate of Rev. Randy Coggins, the congregation outgrew the
sanctuary and services began to be held in the Family. In 2002, the church purchased 27 acres on the Athens
highway and is currently preparing for the construction of a 1,000 seat
sanctuary. Life Center
